SportsMed Global Sports Injury Management

How to reduce sporting injuries and costs

For those of us with an interest in sport we hear daily of this player sustaining this injury or that sportsman have a potentially career ending occurrence. While these sports invariably are well provided for in relation to physiotherapist and sports injury Doctors, the reality is many injuries are still managed in paper form. This means that transference of data is slow and knowledge of the current fitness levels of players in unknown.

SportsMed Global enables the provision of a central database of player information in a consistent and open structure for care of players.
SportsMed Global enables easy access to instantly view player information via internet in the treatment room, office, or out on the pitch, and then share that information with medical colleagues around the globe.

The key to SportsMed is the ability to speedily manage return to play, while sharing best practice to assist in injury prevention. This results in important playing assets being available to play more regularly enabling coaches to more often put the best team out on the pitch.

Primary features of the system are around player injury management:

  • Details of the incident
  • Treatment management
  • Return to play
  • Player availability

Sports Med logoOther features include:

  • Player illness and effect on availability to practice and play
  • Nutritional module with flexible testing and tracking
  • Allergy details and immunisation records for all players
  • Sports Diagnosis coding system (Orchard Scale)
  • Initial and periodic medical checks
  • Cost recording and reporting for each injury/player
  • Strapping requirements for practice and match play
  • Prescription of drugs with immediate notification of banned substances
  • Fitness tracking
  • And much more

SportsMed Global was developed by the New Zealand Rugby Union and has been used exclusively by the All Blacks, NZ Super provinces and NPC sides for the past 7 years. It is now available to clubs and sporting institutions throughout the world. Risk Management Advisory Services are working closely with SportsMed to bring the benefits of SportsMed to the UK.

The Impact of an injury to a senior employee

RMAS Managing Director falls off his bike . . !

Sheridan Smith, Managing Director of Risk Management Advisory Services has completed a couple of charity bike rides this year. These have built upon the Oundle to Paris bike ride undertaken in July 2010 by Sheridan and 3 colleagues when funds were raised for Oundle Volunteer Action. This year’s events were the Wiggle Ride from Huntingdon on Sunday 20th March when over 1,000 riders completed routes of either 44 or 81 miles. Our intrepid leader together with fellow riders from Oundle completed the longer route. That was followed with the Peterborough 100 when again a group of riders from Oundle completed a 100km ride for Action Medical Research.

On Easter Sunday Sheridan was supervising a group of children on their Duke of Edinburgh Gold practice in the Derbyshire Peak District. As he turned a corner at traffic lights his wheels hit gravel and the bike slid from underneath Sheridan. Those of you that know him will be aware that Sheridan isn’t small and in landing heavily broke his left wrist as well as sustaining a number of bruises and an amount of ‘road rash’. His cycle helmet performed its job and while it broke at the front this helped prevent anything more than a swollen and grazed top lip and nose. Without a helmet the head and face injuries could have been far worse.

The treatment from the NHS in Chesterfield and subsequently in Peterborough has been excellent. An operation was successfully carried out on Wednesday 4th May when a plate was inserted in Sheridan’s left wrist.

All good so far – well yes, except for the following –

  • Sheridan is left handed and cannot write (his handwriting wasn’t great before but at least he knew what he had written!)
  • There have been important documents that have required his signature (fortunately we have been able to overcome these issues)
  • He cannot drive for up to another 3 weeks
  • He has been absent from work and the important client relationship and marketing meetings
  • The rehab process doesn’t end when the cast is removed. Indeed it will start then in earnest resulting in more disruption.
  • Risk Management Advisory Services is a relatively small business but it has a number of income streams not all of which are impacted by Sheridan’s absence. Just consider the impact for a one man business or for that matter a larger organisation.

There are some salutary issues for us all. If you would like an independent review of your Key Man issues please call RMAS on 084 321 81 673 or email RMAS.

It Makes You Think

Some More of Life’s Quirks as observed by RMAS

Thinker

At RMAS we are always amused by life and people, particularly when they can be so daft. Here are this months’ selection:

  • The world is full of willing people. Half of them are willing to act. The rest are willing to let them!

  • 42.9% of all statistics are made up on the spot!

  • Only 99% or Solicitors give the rest a bad name. (I don’t mean it – honest!)

  • When in doubt – worry!

  • To be exactly opposite is also a form of imitation.

  • Don’t pray for a lighter burden. Pray for a stronger back!

Please let us know if you have any favourite we can share.

Thank you for reading this issue of Risk Advisor. We trust you found it to be of interest. If you would like to find out more about how RMAS can help you save money or stay legal call RMAS on 084 321 81 673 or email RMAS today.
